How Screen Printing Works - A Quick Lesson

December 14, 2020

No doubt that we are screen printing experts or ‘nerds’ as we affectionately call each other in our little family business here in Toowoomba. We have enjoyed learning the best combination of art, ink type, screen type and squeegee pressure. Not to say that you will too, but we thought we’d give you a quick rundown on how screen printing works.

Versatility

Did you know that screen printing is actually the most common type of garment printing? This is mainly due to its versatility to print on almost ANY material! From silk to polyester and cotton. This means we can print on any type of clothing products and even fabric items like linen, cushion covers and upholstery.

How it works

This is going to come as no surprise to the majority of you, but screen printing is actually a method that literally pushes ink through screens. The method is quick and easy with one colour and when needing more than one colour, each colour requires separate screens. This does limit the number of colours we can print and hopefully explains why cost increases per colour.

Us nerds have mastered the art of different inks and techniques depending on the fabrics needing screen printing. We also know the specific mesh for the screens to print different graphics or work better with the ink we’ve chosen to get the best look and feel of the final product.

Talking about ink - we choose to work with water-based inks. They have a quick dry time which means we need to work quickly and mix straight before going onto the fabric and need to use the right amount (who likes waste!?) Why we love water-based inks is they sink into the fabric better to give the longer-lasting result and also means the design won’t crack over time.

Benefits

Lastly, let’s add the amazing benefit that screen printing is a recyclable process. We can reuse screens after removing the stencil designs and inks to then prep them for a new design - that's great for the environment!

So at the end of the day - the fact that us nerds know our stuff and can control the process and that we can reuse materials - we can produce small to large quantities at a low cost.
